DORDRECHT’S COAT OF ARMS
C. 1850-1950, metal, Building history collection
Dordrecht’s coat of arms consists of a red-white-red shield with two griffins around it. The griffin is a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. The coat of arms can be found as far back as the fifteenth century, but it does not always have griffins next to it or on it. Sometimes the shield is held by a female figure representing the city of Dordrecht.
If you take a good look around the city, you can see griffins in all kinds of places, but because not many adults believe in them anymore, the griffin of Het Hof has become stuck in the fantasy world. Will you be able to free Griffin? You do believe they exist, right?! Ask for the kids’ tour at the desk.
