RELIGIOUS INSIGNIA
C. 1300-1450, lead-tin alloy (replicas), archaeology collection
Insignia depicting Mary with the baby Jesus were popular. On this specimen from Aachen, the robe Mary wore during Jesus’ birth is hanging above her and above that we can see the face of Christ as an adult. The insignia with the chain comes from ’s-Hertogenbosch and also shows Virgin and Child, as does the oval one from Rocamadour in France. The round insignia with the Lamb of God probably came from Rome; the one with the Epiphany is from Cologne. Another insignia shows a pilgrim on his journey.
