COIN-MAKERS AND WARDENS OF THE MINT OF HOLLAND IN DORDRECHT
1657, Samuel van Hoogstraten (1627-1678), oil on canvas, Dordrechts Museum collection, purchased 1893
Dordrecht was politically the most important city in Holland in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This was a legacy from the past, because Dordrecht had been given numerous privileges by the Count of Holland in the Middle Ages. One of the most important privileges was Muntrecht (minting rights): the monopoly on minting coins in the province of Holland.
